Frequently Asked Questions
Getting started with couples therapy
You’re not alone. So many couples come to us feeling disconnected, stuck in the same fight on repeat, or just missing the spark. We help with all of that—and more.
Either online or in person — the first session can feel awkward. You’re sitting beside your partner, maybe with a knot in your stomach, wondering “Whose idea was this again?”
At Couples Reconnect, we get it. This isn’t just a chat—it’s a big step. That first session is a safe space to start unpacking what’s not working, share your story, and begin figuring out what repair might look like.
In session one, we will:
- Get to know your story and what’s not working
- Explore your relationship dynamic and emotional patterns
- Set some goals (even if you’re not totally on the same page yet)
- You’ll also go over the nuts and bolts: your rights, responsibilities, what therapy can offer, and where the limits are. And yes—you can (and should) ask questions. But we promise: this isn’t just a vent session or blame-fest. It’s a safe, supportive space to start figuring things out—together.
Most sessions are 50 minutes—perfect for a focused check-in.
But if you’ve got a lot to unpack (hello, 15 years of resentment), you can book a 75- or 90-minute session too.
No random roulette here. Our Intake Team takes time to learn about you and what you need.
We match you based on:
- Your goals and relationship concerns
- Preferred language or cultural background
- Scheduling needs
- Therapy vibe (super structured vs super warm? We’ve got both)
All about couples therapy
Honestly? That’s totally okay. We expect big feelings to show up—it means you care. You won’t be judged or told to “calm down.” Your therapist is trained to hold space and help you both find your way through the mess, not around it. Our goal isn’t to stop all fights. It’s to help you fight better—with care, clarity, and connection.
This happens all the time. You’re ready to dive in—but they’re giving you the “therapy’s not my thing” side-eye. That’s okay. You can still start. Individual therapy can be a powerful way to shift the whole relationship dynamic from the inside out.
We’ll help you:
- Understand your needs, boundaries, and triggers
- Communicate with care (not just complaints)
- Notice patterns and start changing how you show up
Absolutely. Not all couples stay together—but if you share kids or history, your connection still matters. We help ex-partners move from tension to teamwork, whether you’re co-parenting or simply trying not to lose it every time you text about pickup.
Glad you asked! It’s like decoding your relationship’s choreography—the push, pull, withdraw, react dance that plays out again and again.
Cycle mapping helps you see:
- What’s happening inside (e.g., “I’m not mad—I’m hurt”)
- What’s happening between you (blame, retreat, silence, shouting)
- How to press pause and express what really matters underneath
- New, healthy moves that lead to connection, not collision
Basically: we stop dancing around the issues and start moving toward each other.
